MASTER OF MISTAKES (2022)

Can mistakes mean something different than failure? The artist Daniele Sigalot presents MASTER OF MISTAKES (2022) at La Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporaneain Rome, where mistakes become a work of art. On show until the end of February 2022, the artwork traces the artist’s creative path where mistakes become experience, dialogue, thought, form.

Can the obsessive repetition of a mistake become a success? Daniele Sigalot

Master of Mistakes (2022) shows the mastodonic, irreverent, disordered and, at the same time, harmonious nature of the creative process. The sculpture is a sphere, made up of trashed ideas, unfinished projects, failures andindecisions.

Thousands of crumpled sheets of paper become an ode to the unfinished, to the imperfect, to the inevitable error, but also an inner dialogue that traces Daniele Sigalot’s creative and artistic journey. It is the symbolic union of all the ideas that have been abandoned, rejected, which over time add up to incompleteness but which, by coming together, find the strength to escape their inevitable fate. The crumpled sheet of paper is in fact a sign and metaphor of the daily error, of indecision, of something that is thrown away. An apparent ensemble of paper sheets, light and ephemeral, reveals and communicates that irreverent weight hidden behind every great effort (in study, analysis and spasmodic research) and metaphorically referable to each of us.

The title epitomizes the oxymoronic nature of the work and once again confirms the artist’s playful attitude and his research into the semantic and visual re-signification of the perception of reality. The sculpture, which appears fragile and papery,is actually solid and metallic, made of aluminium and steel and weighing over five quintals. The work translates and reveals the aesthetic paradox through the lightness of paper and its embodiment in the material being of metal.

Can mistakes therefore mean something else ? Daniele Sigalot’s art becomes a mechanism that can turn error into a virtue, and translates it into a material, real, present encounter that only in the alliance of its elements can find a way to exist. In an analysis of Sigalot’s work, the art critic Gianluca Marziani explains “Sheets of aluminium seem to be connected by an atomic energy that manages the orchestral gravity of the individual elements. The final form is a planetary sphere that defies quantum space, a semantic nucleus with Euclidean roots and geological codes, a virtuous metaphor for the molecular processes that sustain the digital universe of the new millennium.”

“From the sheets of papaer -the curator adds -comes the serial intent that reorganises the minimalist roots of the module, multiplying the unit (molar) to form a synchronic (molecular) embrace of multiplicity. Mistakes become experience, dialogue becomes thought, corrections become sculpture”

The molecular form of the sphere welcomes differences and makes them homogeneous, where every failure is necessary to achieve a possible success. MASTER OF MISTAKES symbolically and metaphorically tells something of our time, of us, of our imperfections, of our mistakes, and of how they can take on a different meaning if looked at through a different gaze, capable of expanding the possible implications through the aesthetics of form.
