On view through Sept. 3, 2022, The fifth edition of the project curated by Virginia Monteverde, Stefania Giazzi and Paul Thomassen titled “The Twilight of the Earth” triggers a dialogue between Italian and Swedish artists around environmental issues and the need to reevaluate our relationship with nature and Earth’s ecosystems.

TTOZOI are participating with a pictorial diptych that belongs to the “Genius Loci” series created in 2021 at Anfiteatro campano di Capua. An iconic signature of the artistic duo, the project establishes a dialectical flow with numerous historical places through a temporal suspension during which Nature acts on an organic level.

The informal process, carried out by four hands, involves the use of organic materials (various flours), water and natural pigments on jute canvases, then placed in special cases that encourage the natural proliferation of molds, with ever-changing manifestations; feeding only on the organic part, the spores will interact with the work according to an unknown and apparently chaotic pattern.

Rough inner landscapes, suspended between time and matter, become trace and sign on the canvas, the result of a sui generis process that finds its pictorial character and its constitutive element in the direct intervention of Mother Nature. The canvas becomes land where molds flourish and conquer space and where Nature draws its own architecture, through an unprecedented language.

Genius Loci stems from the need to create works that can express the mystery of life: a microcosm, endowed with its own memory and existence. A new and pure linguistic code, a metaphor for the layering of the memory of place and its essence.

Made in numerous Unesco sites of high symbolic, historical and cultural value, Genius Loci becomes an archive of abstract memories that captures, the soul, the spirit, the “genius” of the place through the unpredictable and irreplaceable sign of the place itself on the canvas. A living grammar, which makes the material imprint on the work a definitive sign in a process between randomness and control that radicalizes the link between Art and Nature, making biology an elaborative and participatory phenomenon.
