Pennacchio Argentato e TTOZOI

Biennale Latitudini dell’Arte 2022

Pennacchio Argentato e TTOZOI

We are pleased to announce the participation of the duo Pennacchio Argentato and TTOZOI in the fifth edition of the Biennale Latitudini dell’Arte, Sweden – Italy, curated by Viriginia Monteverde, Stefania Giazzi and Paul Thomassen at the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa.

The Biennial, one of the most important events for emerging art in Italy, was established in 2013 with the aim of promoting and encouraging artistic-cultural exchange between Italy and other European countries.

Entitled The Twilight of the Earth, the fifth edition addresses the environmental theme and triggers a reflection on the ecosystemic protection of our Mother Earth.

As curator Stefania Giazzi observes, “The fifth edition of the Biennial of Latitudes opened on a profoundly changed world scenario, turned in on itself by pandemics and fear, posing a question to the artists on the evolutionary vision of Mother Earth, involving Sweden, the Scandinavian country with a considerable extension of boreal forests, which are however also threatened by the exploitation system, in the dialogue. The response of the artists in this exhibition was manifested in a multifacetedness of languages that drew on the cultural roots of the countries, but determined a single common denominator, a raising of shields against indifference.”

The artistic duo Pennacchio Argentato presents a new work entitled ‘I’m constantly growing, evolving, and becoming my best self (2022)’. The sculpture investigates the relationship between economy and ecology and addresses the issue of the climate crisis, the melting of glaciers and the depletion of raw materials in relation to the widespread meditative practices of self-affirmation, which are reflected in the title. Contemporary mantras inciting individuals to stay focused on themselves through positive and enthusiastic phrases are here associated with the global ecological crisis, triggering a reflection on a present full of contradictions and the uncertainty of our near future.

TTOZOI presents a pictorial diptych belonging to the ‘Genius Loci’ series. An iconic signature of the artistic duo, the project establishes a dialectical flow with historical places linked to the past through an ‘intervention void’ in which Nature becomes the unpredictable third creator. Created in numerous Unesco sites of high symbolic, historical and cultural value, Genius Loci is an archive of abstract memories that captures, the soul, the spirit, the “genius” of the place through the unpredictable and irreplaceable mark of the place itself on the canvas. A living grammar that makes the material imprint on the work a definitive sign in a process between randomness and control that radicalises the link between Art and Nature, making biology an elaborative and participatory phenomenon.

The Biennial, organised by Art Commission in collaboration with the Fondazione Palazzo Ducale di Genova (Italy), was established in 2013 to facilitate artistic and cultural exchange between Italy and other European countries. After Finland, Hungary, Germany and the Netherlands, the 2022 edition sees the participation of contemporary artists living and working in Italy and Sweden. Sponsored by the City of Genoa, the Region of Liguria and the Embassy of Sweden in Rome, the exhibition will host 40 artists proposed by curators, galleries and foundations from the two countries.
